Course Description:

Tailored for those with some prior experience on the pottery wheel, this five-week Level 3 course offers an in-depth introduction to crafting small to medium-sized teapots. Under the guidance of an experienced tutor, you’ll learn essential techniques for throwing teapot bodies and parts, assembling, trimming, and finishing fully functional teapots. Discover new skills such as lid making, how to form a gallery, throwing off the hump, pulling large handles, and attaching components. This course emphasises the importance of quality and complexity, not quantity, enabling you to create 2–4 complete teapots, each with its own distinct design and character.

Course Outline:

Week 1: Begin with an introduction to throwing teapot bodies and matching lids on the potter’s wheel. Learn how to create a sunken gallery and how to measure and throw a well-fitting lid.

Week 2: Refine your teapot by trimming both the body and lid for a precise fit. This week covers advanced trimming techniques, including tips for adding flanges and crafting decorative finials.

Week 3: Explore throwing off the hump to create smaller components. Learn how to make spouts, side handles, or complementary pieces such as tea bowls.

Week 4: Assemble and personalise your teapot. Carefully attach the various components and add optional surface decoration using techniques like slip trailing.

Week 5: Conclude the course with glazing. Focus on thoughtful glaze application, enhancing both the form and function of your finished teapot.
